Create a bullet point list

Bullet point lists are used frequently to present a list of things. Using bullet points makes a list easier to read than including it all in a sentence.

Here’s how to add a bullet point list:

  1. Put your cursor in some empty space. For this example, go to the bottom of the page and make sure you’re on an empty line.
  2. Click “Bullets”:
  3. Type something then press Enter to continue the list on a new line.

Pro tip: You can start a bullet point list without using the mouse. On a new line, type * then a space. Word will automatically convert that into a bullet point list.

Practice point: Create a bullet point list of at least 5 items. For this example, see if you can create a list of 5 famous celebrities. (Not a fan of celebrities? Try it with fruits instead.)

You should end up with something that looks a bit like this:

A bullet point list of fruits

Now go to the second item on your list. With your cursor at the start of the text, press “Tab” on your keyboard. This will indent the bullet point, to create a sub-list. You can also do this with the Increase Indent / Decrease Indent buttons:

Pro tip: You don’t have to start a bullet point list with empty space. You can turn existing text into a bullet point list by highlighting it first, then clicking “Bullets”. Click it again to remove the bullets.

Don’t like that style of bullets?

Sometimes you’ll want to choose a different style of bullets. When creating your bullet point list, click the arrow next to “Bullets” and you’ll be able to choose a different style.
